Jim’s Journal: Opening and Closing

October 15, 2014 in Jim's Journal

I put in as much time developing my opener and closer as I do working on the body of my presentation.  Why?  I’m competing against attention spans and “to-do” lists.  My other rivals include smartphones, laptops, Ipads and previous experiences that audiences have had with boring, dry, monotone, lifeless, predictable and lethargic facilitators.  I have to snatch their attention early and send them off with a BANG.  I want them so focused on what they’re about to receive that nothing, including going to the bathroom, will get them out of their seat.  I want them so psyched about using their new skills that every social media update that they send immediately following the session is an “accountability partner” request.   Yes, I do focus intently on providing value throughout my presentation.  That’s a no-brainer.  I just think that people under value the power of a solid opener and an inspirational closer.  Give it a whirl.  You’ll see what I’m saying!
