Jim’s Journal: Roll Up Your Sleeves!!!!

February 11, 2014 in Jim's Journal

I recently had dinner with a friend I hadn’t seen in nearly 20 years.  Lynne and I used to work for Prudential during the 1980s and early 90s.  She was a Director in our Customer Service area while I was an Associate Manager in our Human Resources training department.  During dinner, Lynne and I did some major reminiscing!  We talked about our days facilitating diversity training and about the professional development workshops we attended that the organization sponsored specifically for minority professionals.  She said that she wasn’t surprised by the positive things I’d been doing lately.  “Jim, you’ve always had that whatever-it-takes attitude,” she began.  “I remember when you used to work for UPS at night and then come to work the next day at Pru; you were always out on your feet.”  She was referring to the part-time job I took on to help pay for our growing bills.  I would put in my 9 – 5 at Prudential then go home and eat dinner.  I’d then take a nap until 10:00 pm, wake-up, shower then drive into UPS to work the 11:00 pm – 5:00 am shift (loading boxes and mail on to the delivery trucks).  I did this for five months (July – December 1990).  I was even awarded Employee of the Month while I was there.  I had completely forgotten about that experience but Lynne reminded me of that one and many more.  “You’ve always been one to roll up his sleeves, without complaining, to get the job done,” she said.  I inherited that mindset from my mom and I’m glad that I did.  I’m always going to do whatever I have to do to get the job done.  No excuses!  How about you?  Are you willing to do what many won’t and to go to places that others don’t?  I challenge you to step up today!  I believe you’re going to be happy with your new results.
