Jim’s Journal: Do You Really Care?

February 5, 2014 in Jim's Journal

Our plane was about to land.  The gentleman sitting next to me motioned for the flight attendant to come over.  He expressed his concerned about making his connecting flight since our flight was getting in late, due to a 15-minute delay.  The flight attendant gave him a bunch of bull-crap.  As I sat there listening, I thought to myself, “Wrong answer.  He really doesn’t care whether he makes his flight or not.”  There was no empathy, sincerity or concern…just corporate speak – a bunch of blah, blah, blah and more blah.  Then I put my speaker, trainer and author’s hat on.  How many of us treat the people in our lives with the same, blah, blah, blah and more blah spirit?  Do we really care?  Does our behavior illustrate this?  Do we take quality time to listen to them and to love on them?  Do we ever put our own personal agenda on the side?  Do we serve or just give orders?  This experience caused me to stop and think.  When am I that flight attendant?  When do I do my blah, blah, blah and more blah?  Let’s reevaluate how we truly show up in our professional and personal relationships.  Want to do a needs assessment?  Just ask them.  They’ll let you know.
