Jim’s Journal: Bring Value! Bring Value! Bring Value!

Today’s trainers and presenters have more competition than ever before.  We compete with technology (e.g., smart phones and lap tops), early exits, other meetings and the residue left by other dry, lethargic, out of touch and predictable facilitators.  People oftentimes “show up” waiting for you to “throw up” content.  We have to bring value, and quickly.  During my last BOOT CAMP  one of the participants came up to me during the break to offer some feedback.  Valery said that it was 10:30 am and she couldn’t believe that she hadn’t looked at her watch once.  Never one to make it through a full day of training, she said she usually made her exit by 3:00 pm.  At 5:00 pm I was wrapping up a successful Day One when our eyes met.  We both smiled.  She came up to me afterwards and said, “I can’t believe I stayed all day…I never stay to the end.”  At the outset of Day Two of the BOOT CAMP, Valery indicated that she would be leaving after lunch to go to appointment that had been on her calendar for five months.  Let’s just say that during the first break she was rescheduling her appointment.  We have to bring value!  We have to give learners something, new, innovative, simple and that  they can use immediately.  You CAN beat the competition.  The only question now is, “Will you?”
