Jim’s Journal: End it Early – How to Get Your Participants to Want More!

July 10, 2013 in Jim's Journal

Every time I’ve gone to a concert the performance ended early. Within seconds the audience would yell, “We want more!” Minutes later, the performer, and his or her musicians would return to the stage and do another set (or two). I know the routine but each time it happens, a part of me wonders aloud, “Is that it?” As a speaker and trainer, I’m always looking for ways to do what I do, better. What I learned from this “cat and mouse” concert game was that “less is more.” Finish your presentations, speeches, conversations and training sessions prematurely (right in the middle of a powerful point). See what happens. I bet your learners will yell, “We want more!” I use this approach a lot and it hasn’t failed me yet.
