Jim’s Journal: Still Making the Ground rules?!

June 26, 2013 in Jim's Journal

If you still begin your training sessions by reviewing the ground rules that you have painstakingly created, STOP! The participants don’t care about your ground rules. Instead, give them several minutes, working in teams to develop their own ground rules. They’ve created them and they will adhere to them. Add a couple of your ground rules to the end of their list. What’s ironic is that 90% of what’s going to make their list are items that are on your original list. Let them take more responsibility for their learning and you will see a major difference in their energy and participation level. Now, think of other things you can have them do that will free you up. Stop your urge to control everything!
